Issue
As digital literacy and creative confidence became increasingly critical for future careers, many young people lacked access to real-world media environments. Traditional classroom learning struggled to keep pace with technological change, creating a gap between education and industry.
Sky identified an opportunity to inspire the next generation by providing meaningful access to professional tools, immersive environments and real broadcasting experiences.
Insight
Confidence is built through participation, not observation.
To create lasting educational impact, students needed to step into authentic media roles rather than simply learn about them. An experiential model combining storytelling, collaboration and technology would deliver both educational value and long-term brand goodwill.
Idea
I led the development of Sky Skills Studios, a bespoke, digitally enabled experiential environment that replicates a live broadcasting studio.
Students worked in structured production teams, taking on roles such as producer, director, camera operator and editor. Using broadcast-quality equipment, green screens, and touchscreen editing tables, they created their own news reports, trailers, and film pitches within a professionally guided format.
Studios were launched in London, Livingston, Leeds and Dublin, ensuring national reach and scalable programme delivery.
Impact
Since launch, Sky Skills Studios has become Sky’s flagship educational initiative.
Each location hosts up to 12,000 young people annually, with more than half a million students aged 8 to 18 participating free of charge to date. The programme has been recognised within industry circles for its contribution to youth development, experiential learning and creative skills education.
More importantly, it established a scalable, purpose-led platform that continues to inspire the next generation by integrating creativity, technology, and real-world experience.
